FEATURING TWO UK PREMIERES *

Peter Cowdrey I Bremania *

Gustav Holst | Egdon Heath

Guy Barker | Concerto in One Act

                         for violin and orchestra  *

Ralph Vaughan Williams | Symphony no. 5, D major

This concert of English music features two UK premieres commissioned by the BBC Concert Orchestra for our soloist, violinist Charles Mutter: Peter Cowdrey’s witty and irreverent Bremania, and the mercurial Concerto in One Act for violin and orchestra by Guy Barker, a piece strongly influenced by the rhythms and sensibilities of Argentinian Tango. Bremania and the Concerto are set against a context of two English masterpieces of the 20th century: Holst’s elemental Egdon Heath based on Hardy’s Return of the Native, and the sublime and radiant Fifth Symphony by Vaughan Williams, which he completed in 1943.
