Cellist Sara Lovell joins Bristol Symphony Orchestra in the beautiful surrounds and acoustic of Trinity-Henleaze for this stunning programme of popular Romantic works. The concert is in support of Bristol based charity, Penny Brohn Cancer Care. The performance opens with Beethoven's intense and fiery Coriolan Overture, written for Heinrich Joseph von Collin's 1804 tragedy, Coriolan. Schumann's deeply felt and emotional Cello Concerto follows: a work that was completed by the composer in just two weeks during the Autumn of 1850. The piece was never performed during the Schumann's lifetime, receiving its premiere on 9th June 1860, four years after his death, in a concert to mark the 50th anniversary of the composer's birth. For the second half, DvoÅ™ák's poetic Silent Woods for Cello and Orchestra leads us to Schubert's beautiful and enigmatic Unfinished Symphony - perhaps a musical equivalent of the Mona Lisa. The piece, conceived in two parts, takes us on an extraordinary journey from mystery to reconciliation. The evening concludes with a surprise item involving a little audience participation!
