Bristol Symphony warmly welcomes international jazz saxophonist, Andy Sheppard, to perform Gershwin's Porgy and Bess Suite, as part of an exciting all-American programme, where jazz meets Bristol Symphony. For Fanfare for the Common Man, composer Aaron Copland was inspired by vice president Henry A Wallace's famous 1942 speech, where he proclaimed the dawning of the 'Century of the Common Man'. West Side Story remains an essential part of the history of American theatre. Composer Leonard Bernstein assembled nine sections from his musical to make a dynamic orchestral concert piece, the Symphonic Dances. The work captures all the energy, drama and excitement of the original, including a portrayal of  the chaotic pace of New York life in the 1950s. The concert concludes with Terry Riley's seminal minimalist work, In C.
