Musical Director

Robert Weaver

Robert Weaver has been Music Director of the Bristol Symphony Orchestra since 2022. He is known for his imaginative programming and thoughtful, energetic interpretations across a wide range of repertoire. He has conducted ensembles including Sinfonia Smith Square, Bath Philharmonia, the St Petersburg Chamber Philharmonic, and the Oxford Sinfonia, and has enjoyed close collaborations with soloists such as Jennifer Pike, Isata Kanneh-Mason, Helen Charlston, and Gareth Brynmor John. Deeply committed to new music, Robert regularly programmes works by living composers and in November 2022 conducted the world premiere of Sam Foster’s original score to Dracula (1931) at a sold-out screening at St George’s Bristol. He studied conducting with Lev Parikian and Alexander Polyanichko, and has taken part in masterclasses with Martyn Brabbins and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. A violinist by training, he brings a collaborative, musician-led approach to rehearsals and performances, and balances his musical life with his work as a GP.
